Keep Sierra Green Speaks at Foothills Chapter

The Foothills Chapter welcomed their strategic partner, the Keep Sierra Green (KSG) Business Program, to the March Speaker Series. The event was held in the meeting room of Sierra Commons at the top of the Stone House. Lynne Cody Lacroix of Nevada County Recycles and Tom Larsen of Green Smart presented the program and its benefits.

Lynne presented an overview of the KSG program and listed some of their current participants, including SiGBA member David Yonenaka of Fine Line Design. This voluntary program was modeled after the Bay Area Green Business Program. It was in turn modified by the KSG partners, including Eli Meyer of SiGBA, to suit the more rural business community. The checklist provides many areas that lead to cost savings and allows participants to record their sustainable practices in different areas of their operation. Once the requirements are fulfilled and confirmed with a member of KSG, the business is then recognized in the community as a leader in sustainable practices. They receive media coverage, a profile in the Chamber of Commerce and a window decal to display.

Tom Larsen inspired the audience to participate in the KSG program. His company, Green Smart, uses plastic bottles as their raw material to create computer bags, water bottle koozies, lunch bags and other cool items. GreenSmart's philosophy states they always "seek greener materials and work with suppliers to utilize energy-efficient, eco-conscious and people sensitive ways to produce their products." Tom feels when a company reduces and reuses material, the bottom line improves not only for the company but also for the communities where they operate. They participate in sustainable programs along their entire global supply chain. This participation allows them to show each community that they care about the local economy and its environment. Becoming a member of KSG was an easy decision; their business headquarters are located in the beautiful Sierra foothills and this program provides guidelines to honor and preserve this beauty.
