Details about Calera Corporation and the Presentation:
Calera Corporation is dedicated to reversing global warming by trapping carbon dioxide and converting it to a practical building material such as cement. By sequestering this carbon dioxide and placing it into the built environment, Calera is proactively reducing the level of free carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.
Calera was founded by Brent Constantz, PhD, who holds over 60 patents in the field of specialty cements and has built three successful firms in the last decade. Backed by Khosla Ventures, Calera has utilized a team of scientists and engineers to move beyond the laboratory, and has established a 200-acre pilot facility to scale the carbon capture sequestration process up significantly.
In general, the Calera process starts with a water source and waste CO2 from sources such as coal-fired power plants, and produces building materials and clean water from the process, while capturing the CO2 inside the building material itself. The Calera process is being structured to produce building materials, including fine aggregates and hydraulic cements which can be used in the production of quality concrete. Concrete is the most durable of building materials. By producing roadways, buildings, and infrastructure from a concrete that contains significant levels of sequestered carbon, architects, engineers and agency officials have the opportunity to provide sustainable infrastructure while reducing the potential for further global warming. Perhaps the most exciting part of the Calera process, is its ability to help make electricity produced from coal with almost no carbon footprint, making our abundant coal resources usable for the production of clean energy.
The carbon dioxide from the flue gas is converted to carbonate and sequestered as calcium and magnesium carbonate minerals, which are separated from seawater and further processed to produce cement or other building materials. The building materials will be distributed to the local building industry, sequestering the carbon dioxide in the built environment in the form of carbonate, instead of adding to increasing atmospheric concentrations of green house gases, and displacing conventional materials such as Portland cement, whose production also emits carbon dioxide.
