Gleaning, An Anxient Practice?
"Gleaning is an anxient practise that we are trying to revive in Reno," said Pamela Mayne, CEO, from Sun Oven's Reno. Common since Biblical times; the old testiment tells a story of how Ruth met Boaz while gleaning his field and their union became the lineage for Jesus. The purpose of gleaning is to allow the underprivileged to harvest produce what would ordinarily be left in the fields to perish. Now take a modern spin on gleaning, "fruit bartering," and you have what Pamela is creating at the Great Basin Community Food Cooperative at 542-1/2 Plumas Street in Reno.

Anyone can participate. All one needs to do is bring their excess fruit to the Great Basin Community Coop, and drop the fruit off in the baskets left in front of the store. One can either trade for another kind of fruit or leave it put since any spare fruit will be donated to Reno food banks.

KRNV, Channel 4 is going to pick up the story so look for the media coverage. In the meantime, those of you who have fruit trees can harvest the unused fruit and put it to good use.

Community Garden Blog
Last fall, I started a compost to create soil for a garden I planned for spring. I wrote about it in the April SiGBA Times.

While I was successful in creating soil, I didn't get my garden together in time for our short growing season.

My neighbor, Teresa, who has much experience treating soil and growing gardens in this locale, took pity and gave me some space in her garden. The garden prospered, and we are now enjoying fresh vegetables; there is nothing better than a vine ripened tomato.

I've heard about community gardens. I'd like to hear from you. Who is participating in a community garden and what is your experience? Please conribute comments to the community garden blog.

Michael and Zane behind the camera
SiGBA had a productive summer and it was hard saying goodbye to our two filmmaking students from Savannah College of Art and Design. Thanks to hard work from Zane, Michael and the other filmmakers, SiGBA has several episodes of its environmental program in production. To view some 10-minute episodes see http://sigba.org/video/

2009 Green Building Tour Showcases Tahoe Homes
SiGBA's annual green building tour is October 17. This tour will be guided via bus leaving from the Tahoe City PUD at 9:30am and includes lunch. Tour five homes along the north and west shores of Lake Tahoe where residents, designers and builders will be on hand to show what it's like to build and live in buildings that use everything from renewable energy sources, straw-bale construction, local & recycled materials to local earthen plaster interior finishes.

Leanna Duncan, Interior Designer and Events Coordinator for SiGBA said, "Walking through a home that has taken on responsible design, and using innovative building materials to create an efficient and beautiful space is an experience that I hope inspires people to make changes in their own homes and workplaces."
