Events

August was a special month in that it showcased two SiGBA Speaker Series events.  Mat Stein and Chris Hurst led an interactive discussion on Fire Resistive Building & Wholistic Mountain Construction twice in the month of August. They presented to North Shore residents in the Village at Squaw Valley, as well as being the first of many South Lake Tahoe Speaker Series!  $132 was donated to the Locals for Locals Fund benefiting Angora Fire victims.  The second Speaker Series of August brought Chris Brown of Shimotsu Distribution Inc talking on Concrete Structural Panels.  In continuing the trend of August double features, this presentation occurred in both Truckee and Reno.

Coming up for September is Stephen Witek of Sustainable Environment Engineered Design (SEED).  On September 18, join SiGBA at the Cedar House Sport Hotel for Stephen's presentation on various energy codes, energy use calculations, and building site analysis.  Check out our website, www.sigba.org for more information.

Also, keep tuned in to our upcoming Green Building Tour for North Lake Tahoe.  This year's tour includes homes in Dollar Point, Alpine Meadows, Homewood and Meeks Bay.  Again, we'll be providing transportation and food, so you'll be all taken care of.  Cost of the event will be $20 for members and $35 for non-members, of course with an extra special deal on individual membership, offered exclusively at this event.  This year we're providing something extra at this event, a Member's Only Mixer.  We're still working out specifics, so keep checking in to the website for more information.

October LEED Forum

In late October (date TBD) co-sponsored by CATT, we are sponsoring a public forum on LEED standards which will provide specific information to the public, media, decision makers, and building industry on the merits and troubles of policy regulation mandating the LEED certification program for commercial and residential construction.

Outcomes for the forum include creating a balanced public forum for information sharing information; creating a better understanding of the economic and environmental advantages and disadvantages of the LEED rating system; setting the stage for public discussion in Truckee coinciding with  the update of the Development Code per Truckee General Plan Actions COS A15.1 (Priority 3) and COS A15.2 (Priority 1).

Co-Housing Update

On Sunday, September 30th the Truckee Cohousing community is holding an information session introducing a progressive concept in affordable, ecological, community housing.

Cohousing was first established in Denmark, with communities sprouting up across the United States.  Cohousing communities are restoring the traditional sense of neighborhood where residents maintain close relationships with their neighbors, developing a strong sense of community, something that has been lost from our typical residential developments and suburbs.

The Truckee Cohousing community began forming in October 2006. The group consists of families, couples, and individuals sharing a vision of environmentally and socially sustainable living through investing in green building and commitment to community. Members share values including a desire for more ecologically balanced living, more time with family and friends, more opportunities for art and recreation, and the need to create safe, creative, and healthy spaces for children.

The presentation will include a slideshow and presentation by Cohousing Partners as well as an opportunity to meet members of the Truckee Cohousing community.  Families are welcome, and light brunch snacks and activities for children will be provided.  Learn More.
