SiGBA's Tahoe GreenFEST a Success
For its first year, SiGBA could not be more delighted. Everyone sang the praises of an event gone right! Nestled on the marina green at the Boatworks Mall and overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe, there were nearly 40 exhibitors present and plenty of new faces encouraged by high tourist season in Tahoe City. Five local bands played live music creating the perfect ambiance for SiGBA to further its mission of educating and promoting effective environmental practices throughout the region.

The electricity was generated on site by Bently Biofuels using fuel produced from locally recycled cooking oils. The Alternative Transportation Club & Electric Auto Association of Northern Nevada brought a large assortment of electric vehicles to complement the Tesla Roadsters on display. Tesla whose high end Roadsters can go 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and recently received a stimulus grant from the federal government was one of the star attractions at the event.

Fun was had by all. SiGBA gave away more than 40 raffle prizes and guests were able to bid on over 20 silent auction items generously donated to SiGBA by vendors and local Tahoe City businesses. The feedback SiGBA received from Tahoe City and the green community was very encouraging and we are conducting surveys to help us plan for an even better event next year.

SiGBA Announces greenUP! Chapter in Reno
SiGBA and greenUP! announce the creation of a new SiGBA chapter in Reno. "This partnership marks an important development in the regional environmental movement, working together to promote and educate sustainable practices in the Sierra Nevada communities," said Eli Meyer, SiGBA President.

My Vision for the collaboration between greenUP! and SiGBA is to provide a resource for businesses in the region for successful implementation of sustainability and green practices, said Andrew Goodrich, chairman of greenUP and Director of Air Quality Management Division of Washoe County District Health.

Kevin Dick from the UNR Business Environmental Program ran greenUP! for its first two years. He said, greenUP! began as an ad hoc group of sustainability leaders volunteering their time to promote organization, events, and information about initiatives occurring in the region. greenUP s affiliation with SiGBA allows that promotion and education to continue and solidifies the regional nature of our view toward sustainable action.

greenUP! will be hosting a live green build green speaker series this fall Topics will be focused on sustainability issues that are both regional and nationally based. Some joint mixers with other Reno environmental groups are planned.

Zane and Michael on location at the Benly Biofuels processing facility in Minden, NV
You may have noticed some young filmmakers capturing highlights of SiGBA events. Michael Howell and Zane Yarbrough from Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia spent the summer in Truckee filming a number of environment stories. They took part in six episodes and the finished productions will be placed on the SiGBA website during August.

Michael and Zane also produced the video for local radio personality J.D.Hoss. His program, Living the Tahoe Life airs live Friday mornings on 101.5FM. You can view segments on You Tube or www.truckeetahoeradio.com. Filmmakers interested in participating in the fun should contact Producer Donna Walden at info@sigba.org.

SiGBA Partners with TDPUD to launch energy conservation program
Scott Terrell points out sources of energy consumption and applied conservation measures at a Truckee home.
In mid-July, SiGBA finalized a partnership with the Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD) and the Truckee Family Resource Center (FRC) to provide free energy conservation assistance to low-income households in Truckee. SiGBA is hiring local energy professionals to do in-house consultations with residents, helping them better understand their energy use and provide them with some basic tools to reduce consumption. SiGBA is serving as the implementation partner, coordinating and managing the energy surveys with support from the partner organizations.

On August 7, SiGBA and the Truckee Donner PUD completed their first training class for 11 energy surveyors, and plan to do another training class in September.

The objective is to use partnership as an incubator program, giving emerging energy professionals the opportunity to get out into the community and work with homeowners. "We hope this program will give our surveyors the experience to stand out in today's competitive business environment" says Eli Meyer, Project Manager.

SiGBA is encouraged by the community support received so far and by the caliber of the energy surveyors who have expressed interest in this program. While the current program is limited to the Truckee community, SiGBA is looking for partners interested in expanding energy conservation programming to the surrounding Sierra Nevada communities.
